Order of Tanoa
The Order of Tanoa was a national order of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen for exceptional service to Tanoa or exceptional individual courage.[1] Its official names were Orden de Tanoa in Spanish and Orden von Tanoa in German.[2] It ranked below the Order of Jan Paap in the state's honours hierarchy.[3]
Membership
[edit | edit source]Membership was open to Tanoan and foreign individuals, including service personnel. The order was undivided, recognizing civil merit alongside military or diplomatic service. Scientific or cultural achievement could qualify, as could contributions to the economy or public welfare.[1]
Ordinary members entered as Knights and advanced one grade at a time to Grand Cross. Each promotion required at least three years in the current grade and new service of greater importance after the previous award. Military rank or civil office did not determine grade. The chancellery judged the importance and lasting value of the service without a points system or fixed geographic threshold. The Collar stood outside this progression and was reserved for the Führer as Grand Master or allied heads of state.[1]
Insignia
[edit | edit source]The badge was a white-enamel Maltese cross with gold edging and a Tanoan eagle inside a gold palm wreath at its centre. The ribbons and Grand Cross sash were white with narrow light-blue and black edge stripes. Grand Cross and Grand Officer breast stars were golden sunbursts bearing the eagle and palm wreath. The Collar chain alternated black-enamel swastika medallions with gold palm links.[1]
| Grade, highest first | Insignia[1] |
|---|---|
| Collar | Collar chain and badge |
| Grand Cross | Sash badge and breast star |
| Grand Officer | Neck badge and breast star |
| Commander | Neck badge |
| Officer | Breast badge on a ribbon with rosette |
| Knight | Breast badge on a plain ribbon |
Members wore only their highest grade and kept earlier insignia.[1]
Appointments
[edit | edit source]The chancellery examined nominations before submitting them to the Führer. As Grand Master, he approved every appointment and promotion, although another official could present the insignia. Every appointment remained in the chancellery's roll.[1]
Appointments obtained through fraud or false evidence could be annulled, as could those based on a fundamental eligibility error. Valid awards could be revoked for treason or enemy service. Serious crime or conduct gravely dishonouring the order also provided grounds for revocation. Both forms of cancellation required a chancellery investigation and a reasoned Führer decree.[4] Revoked members lost the right to wear the insignia and were removed from the active roll, while the cancelled appointment remained in the historical record.[1]
Recipients
[edit | edit source]Eef Paap held the Collar as Grand Master.[5] He personally awarded the order to Miguel Ángel Schneider during Schneider's tenure as chief of staff of SS-Oberabschnitt Osttanoa. Schneider had survived an ambush in which the other SS members accompanying him were killed, then killed the remaining resistance fighters before returning to headquarters.[6]
