Jorge Carbini (born 31 January 1947) is an Argentine former Tanoa Einsatzgruppen officer and convicted war criminal. He served in the Waffen SS and Allgemeine SS, reaching the rank of SS-Standartenführer. He also commanded the SS-Gebirgstruppe. In 2025, the Georgetown Tribunal convicted him of war crimes and crimes against humanity for ordering attacks against civilians and his responsibility for the persecution of detainees. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Military career
[edit | edit source]Carbini was born on 31 January 1947 in Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina. He enlisted in the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen on 20 December 1965, aged 18. By 1985, he was serving in the Waffen SS as an SS-Obersturmbannführer, assigned to the 15th SS-Grenadier-Division "Prinz Paap".
Carbini commanded the SS-Gebirgstruppe, a Waffen SS mountain formation that operated in Tanoa and Argentina. Its soldiers patrolled mountainous territory under Tanoan control and conducted raids against resistance forces. Fabian Albert Guelfo was another commander of the formation.[1]
In 1992, Carbini survived an assassination attempt in Georgetown when an attacker opened fire on his vehicle. Beto Ceballos, an Allgemeine SS officer assigned to escort Carbini, pulled him behind a parked military vehicle. Ceballos was shot in the leg during the attack and spent six months recovering. He returned to duty and became Carbini's permanent bodyguard in 2005.
Carbini also served in the Allgemeine SS, where he held the rank of SS-Standartenführer. He was assigned to the 1st SS-Especiales-Sturm-Division "Heil Jan".
Conviction and imprisonment
[edit | edit source]Carbini's military service ended on 30 November 2024, when the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen collapsed and the Waffen SS and Allgemeine SS were dissolved.[2]
In 2025, Carbini appeared before the Georgetown Tribunal to answer charges concerning crimes committed during his military service. He had ordered attacks deliberately directed against civilians. Soldiers under his command had also unlawfully detained prisoners and subjected them to torture.
The tribunal convicted Carbini of war crimes for ordering attacks against civilians. It also found him responsible for the persecution and forcible displacement of civilians, for which he was convicted of crimes against humanity. The judgment included convictions for torture and unlawful detention arising from the treatment of prisoners by forces under his command.
Carbini was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2025. He remains in custody.
