Cross of the Cigar Order
The Cross of the Cigar Order was a decoration of the Tanoa Einsatzgruppen for service to the Führer's cigar programme. Its official names were Kreuz des Zigarrenordens in German and Cruz de la Orden del Cigarro in Spanish.[1] Eef Paap established it on 6 November 1987 as part of his reorganization of Tanoan honours.[2][3] He received both its Gold and Silver divisions.[4]
Divisions
[edit | edit source]Gold and Silver were independent divisions of one decoration. Neither was a prerequisite for the other. Tanoan and foreign individuals were eligible for both, including service personnel.[5]
| Division | Qualifying service[5] | Approval[3] |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | Exceptional personal or political service to the cigar programme, including prestige projects or propaganda. Employment in cigar production was not required. | Personal approval by the Führer |
| Silver | Distinguished work in cigar production and supply, including agricultural or industrial work, technical improvements, and administrative or logistical service | Chancellery in the Führer's name |
The German division names used in Gold and in Silber, while the Spanish names used en Oro and en Plata. A holder of both divisions wore Gold alone and retained the Silver insignia. Both awards remained separately recorded.[5]
Insignia
[edit | edit source]The decoration took the form of a pin-backed eight-pointed star worn on the right breast. Its central wreath was gilt for Gold and silvered for Silver. Within the wreath, a black roundel showed an upright brown-enamel cigar. The cigar's gold band bore the EP monogram.[5]
