Tromsø is a city in Troms county, northern Norway, approximately 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. It is the administrative centre of Tromsø Municipality and one of the main urban centres of northern Norway. The city centre occupies the eastern shore of Tromsøya, an island between the Norwegian mainland and Kvaløya. Tromsø developed as a fishing port and centre for Arctic expeditions during the nineteenth century. It is now a centre for higher education and polar research, with an economy that also depends on fishing and tourism. == Geography and climate == Tromsø is situated on Tromsøya, surrounded by fjords and mountains. The Tromsø Bridge crosses Tromsøysundet to Tromsdalen on the mainland, while the Sandnessund Bridge connects the island to Kvaløya in the west. The municipality extends beyond the city across coastal islands and mountainous mainland territory. Tromsø has a subarctic climate with long, snowy winters and short, cool summers. The influence of the North Atlantic Current moderates winter temperatures despite the city's northern latitude. Snowfall is common from autumn into spring. The city experiences the midnight sun from approximately 20 May to 22 July, when the sun remains above the horizon throughout the day. During the polar night, from late November until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon. The northern lights are frequently visible during clear nights in the darker months. == History == The Tromsø area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries in the municipality include prehistoric rock carvings and remains of early settlements. A church existed on Tromsøya during the Middle Ages, when the settlement formed part of the coastal communities of northern Norway. Tromsø received trading town privileges on 20 June 1794. Its harbour subsequently developed through fishing and maritime trade. During the nineteenth century, the city became an important departure point for Arctic hunting expeditions. By the 1850s, Tromsø had become one of the main centres of Norwegian activity in the Arctic waters. During the early twentieth century, expeditions departed from Tromsø for the polar regions. The port supplied vessels travelling north and continued handling fishing boats serving the Norwegian coast. The opening of the Tromsø Bridge in 1960 improved road access between Tromsøya and the mainland. Tromsø Airport opened at Langnes in 1964, providing regular air connections with southern Norway. The Sandnessund Bridge opened in 1974 and supported residential development on Kvaløya. The University of Tromsø was established in 1968 and opened to students in 1972. Its establishment expanded higher education in northern Norway and brought additional research activity to the city. == Economy and transport == Tromsø is an important fishing port, with commercial fishing and aquaculture contributing to the local economy. The harbour accommodates fishing vessels and passenger ships travelling along the Norwegian coast. The city also has a substantial public sector. The Arctic University of Norway conducts research in fields including Arctic science and medicine. Tourism provides employment, particularly during the winter northern lights season and the summer midnight sun period. Tromsø Airport is situated on the western side of Tromsøya. It handles domestic flights and international services. Road transport connects the city with the mainland through the Tromsø Bridge and Tromsøysund Tunnel, which opened in 1994. Tromsø has no railway connection to the Norwegian railway network. == Landmarks == Tromsø Cathedral, completed in 1861, is a wooden church situated in the city centre. The Arctic Cathedral, opened in 1965, stands in Tromsdalen across the Tromsøysundet strait. The Polar Museum documents the city's history of Arctic hunting and exploration. Older wooden buildings remain along parts of the central waterfront, including structures dating from the late eighteenth century. == See also == * Norway * Troms * Tromsøya * Kvaløya
