== Geography and climate ==

Tromsø is situated on Tromsøya, surrounded by fjords and mountains. The [[Tromsø Bridge]] crosses Tromsøysundet to [[Tromsdalen]] on the mainland, while the Sandnessund Bridge connects the island to Kvaløya in the west. The municipality extends beyond the city across coastal islands and mountainous mainland territory.

Tromsø has a subarctic climate with long, snowy winters and short, cool summers. The influence of the North Atlantic Current moderates winter temperatures despite the city's northern latitude. Snowfall is common from autumn into spring.

The city experiences the midnight sun from approximately 20 May to 22 July, when the sun remains above the horizon throughout the day. During the polar night, from late November until mid-January, the sun remains below the horizon. The northern lights are frequently visible during clear nights in the darker months.
